| The Institute for
Excellence in Urban Education
Presents
Earth and Life Sciences are brought to life for urban students
as they encounter nature on the 1300+ acres of the Salesmanship Club Youth
Camp. Students and teachers participating in Science Goes to Camp spend
a day in the Piney Woods of East Texas, planned to engage fourth and fifth
grade students in activities that allow them to interact meaningfully
with the natural environment. Science vocabulary comes alive when students
are allowed to direct their interests to the sights and sounds surrounding
them in the forest ecosystem.
The Institute for Excellence in Urban Education team works with classroom
teachers to enhance their curriculum with hands-on, meaningful experiences
that allow students to follow their curiosity into the complexities of
science. Projects focus on real world applications, and require:
- discussions and related learning centers in the classroom before
and after the day trip to Camp;
- cooperative work between the students;
- students to analyze the information gained; and
- students to share and document their learning with others.
Students feel a sense of autonomy and competence that leads to engagement
and a deep investment in the learning.
Institute for Excellence in Urban Education Goal: To
create curriculum, teacher development, classroom support, and a Salesmanship
Club Youth Camp experience that focuses on the Science Texas Essential
Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and TAKS understanding for students.
Location: The Salesmanship Club Youth Camp is located
between Hawkins and Mineola, approximately three miles north of US Hwy.
80. (IEUE provides transportation for the two-hour bus trip from Dallas.)
